On average, a trip to Automotive Rhythms (AR) headquarters is always exciting; an opportunity to meet up with warrior poet and world traveler Kimatni D. Rawlins (also the Publisher of AR), as well as the chance to see what magnificent machines grace the AR garage destined for vehicular validation for the urban automotive experience. My luck had me checking in on a Friday for the opportunity to test drive the 2013 Infiniti G37 IPL hard-top convertible coupe!
At first glance the pearl-coated color scheme on this drop-top screams brilliant black, but as the early evening sunset glare danced on the aerodynamic roof and rear, a speckled varsity purple presented itself in a major way. Our G37 was represented by the IPL version or better known as the Infiniti Performance Line. The demo highlighted enhancements within the sports package including a 3.7-liter V6 engine, split V-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with summer performance tires, an Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with a 7-inch WVGA color touch-screen display, 3-D building graphics, Lane Guidance, and a booming Bose 13-speaker Open Air Sound System, including the very specific front seat speakers featuring noise adaptive technology and more!
My three day itinerary lead me from the Maryland back roads of Upper Marlboro, Bethesda and Bowie to the bustling beltway of Baltimore County as well as the outskirts of the Inner Harbor by way of Holabird Avenue where almost every eye glazed upon the IPL. When syncing my iPad with Frank Ocean’s latest release Channel Orange, the 13-speaker system soothed even in an open air environment. Normally I would line up directions on my iPhone for convenience, but the NAV System was extremely user friendly from start to finish. We toured this champion chariot to Jimmy’s Seafood in Baltimore, an Enkore dance production in Laurel, MD, a Day Party at Barcode in Washington D.C., and the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, MD, which recently won a Steve Harvey Hoodie Award for best Church in the United States!
The convertible coupe did have some minor setbacks specific with the top conversion; the estimated open/close time was fairly long (almost half a minute). And when opening the roof — as the trunk closes — it shakes the vehicle aggressively, almost forcibly. I’m sure with numerous open/close activations, something may go wrong. In addition, with the top down, there is absolutely no trunk space whatsoever. Maybe an authentic work briefcase will fit, but no room for anything else. But the purpose of this performance product by Infiniti is not for your daily work routine, but rather geared towards an adventurous and dynamic drive through the curves and corners of the city or countryside. Especially during date night!
