Back in July, the environmentally conscious Leonardo DiCaprio announced that he would be both partnering and investing in green automaker Fisker Automotive, and he recently revealed that a big part of that decision was based on the electric cars he’s owned in the past and their limited ranges.

DiCaprio told Top Gear, “I started trying hybrids, which were fantastic,” he says. But you can say that there are lots of vehicles out there that get equal or better mileage. Then I bought two electric vehicles, which I found I never wanted to drive. I was afraid of being stranded on the Pacific Coast Highway and standing at a restaurant for six hours while my vehicle’s plugged in.”

The fact that Fisker is a beautiful sports car couldn’t have hurt either. DiCaprio only owns two cars: a hybrid Lexus and a Fisker Karma.

The world-famous actor is involved in Fisker’s manufacturing plans and would work closely on marketing and promotional initiatives, and his core focus remains on sustainability. Fisker Automotive also agreed to support and promote DiCaprio’s charitable work around the world.

Fisker announced that it’ll be expanding into the booming Chinese market next year. Continuing for this year, it has agreements to begin selling in North Africa and the Middle East. The Dubai Fisker store should be completed before 2013.
