Officials at McLaren weren’t sure how the MP4-12C would be received in the United States, worried that the McLaren name wasn’t famous enough to command respect among buyers.
However, McLaren built its 1000th car in February, and 40 percent of the orders were coming from the U.S.
The sheer thrust of the twin-turbo V8 engine, the ride quality and the responsiveness of the chassis are all impressive features of the McLaren. It’s even being compared to the Ferrari 458, which is no small compliment.
The expandable lineup will include convertible and stripped-down versions of the MP4-12C, following the playbook written by Ferrari and Porsche that seems to work. The company is still working on distinct models with different price points and different styling on both the interior and exterior.
One of them will be the successor to the legendary F1. The ueber-McLaren, code-named P12, will feature an F1-style Kinetic Energy Recovery System that will able it to deploy an additional 200 horsepower in short bursts.
