Steve McQueen’s Ford GT40 featured in the 1971 racing classic movie named Le Mans sold for $11 million at a Peach Beach Auction, breaking the record to make it America’s most expensive car.

The 1968 GT40 was among a number of cars featured in the movie to present the best of auto racing on the silver screen, and although a simple Ford GT40 is worth about $100,000 in the market, McQueen’s restored car is an exceptional piece of American history.

Under the hood is a supercharged V8 engine that produces 500 horsepower and 500 pounds-feet of torque. The two-door coupe can sit two people and goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a mere 4 second with top speeds of up to 185 miles per hour.

While the buyer remains anonymous, he undoubtedly scored an exclusive collector’s item that will increase in value in the coming years.
