Last week, Tesla Motors announced its plans to open 10 news stores in the United States and Canada, the first of which opened Friday at Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, New York.

Once completed, the 10 new stores brings the company to a total of 24 locations in the U.S. and 34 worldwide. Tesla will continue to expand throughout 2013 as well.

Tesla follows a different sales and distribution model from other automakers, one it calls “transformative” for the industry. Rather than distributing cars through independent dealerships, Tesla operates a direct sales model, and each store is located in a retail shopping center where the purpose is focused on education on the merits of electric vehicles rather than sales. Vehicle service and the actual sales process occurs elsewhere.

Following the Garden City opening will be a store in Natick, MA, Chicago, two in New Jersey, one in San Diego, Miami, McLean, Virginia and Topanga, California. Tesla will also open its first Canadian store in Toronto in November.
